My name is Rudolf Diesel. I founded ScienceMedia in 2000 and have been working as a freelance filmmaker in Germany ever since, specializing in nature documentaries. My professional career spans many stages, from mechanical engineer, scientist/zoologist to filmmaker. As an engineer, I designed and built the first underwater high-speed cameras, recording up to 3000 frames per second at highest resolution. As an animal behaviorist, I have studied marine and terrestrial species and published more than 40 scientific articles and books. As a cameraman and ultra-slow-motion specialist, I have worked on more than 100 international television and feature films. I love new challenges, and recently I have been developing remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROUVs or ROVs) equipped with professional camera technology to provide fascinating images of our vast and mysterious oceans.

Remotely Operated Vehicles

From an early age I was interested in the underwater world and as a researcher I spent countless hours researching the lifestyle of marine creatures. As a wildlife filmmaker, I have been involved in the development of new technologies to enable new, spectacular images from the underwater world. Images and videos are the most important information we get from the depths. Therefore I started designing and building submersible drones that deliver excellent image quality and meet the demands of the film industry. These underwater drones are equipped with professional cameras and excellent flight characteristics. The SM Explorer II is flexible in design and can be quickly adapted to new tasks.

ScienceMedia looks forward to your order.

Ultra-High-Speed Camera

Ultra-slow-motion opens new insights into our world. ScienceMedia works with the best high-speed cameras currently available, the Phantom 4K and the Phantom Flex 2K. In 2005, I started out as one of the world's first freelance specialists for high-speed-television filming. His home-made Typhoon HD4 delivered spectacular slow-motion shots for the BBC series South Pacific as early as 2009. As a specialist in slow motion, I worked on numerous commercials, art projects, international TV and cinema productions. With a self-built underwater housing for the Phantom Flex, I can make underwater ultra-slow-motion recordings at 3000 fps or higher.

ScienceMedia is happy to slow down time for you.

Nature Documentaries

I have always had a passion for capturing nature on film. On numerous expeditions I documented indigenous peoples, nature and wildlife in remote regions of the world. Through high-speed photography, I discovered many animal behaviors that were new to science. For the first time, I documented the sex change of a fish in the wild.

With the underwater robot SM Explorer II, new and exciting projects enable us to bring the unknown, mystical life forms of the ocean depths to the screen.

Let us work together.

Royalty-Free Slow-Motion Clips

ScienceMedia has an extensive image and video archive with slow-motion, macro and underwater footage. This film library may provide the perfect high-speed sequence for your productions. Our high-speed film archive includes over 4000 slow-motion footage shot at up to 3000 frames per second or higher. Here you will find unique recordings that you will not find anywhere else. You can purchase clips for your production at affordable licensing fees.
The archive is currently being expanded in the areas of 4K and drone footage.

Research & Sciences

My research area is behavioral ecology. My research focuses on the evolution of animal behavior and specifically reproductive and mating behaviors. I conducted research around the world on marine and terrestrial crustaceans, among other things. Find a summary of the research results to date here: Science. Find a list of publications under Publications. The results attracted great interest from the press and were shown on television several times. A film about the spectacular Jamaican Crabs is available on my YouTube channel.

Projects

Whether deserts, rain forests, caves, the Arctic, or indigenous peoples, endless exciting projects await us. ScienceMedia seeks partners to implement projects together.
A prime task is to study the marine environment. Water covers 71% of our planet's surface, yet we know less about this habitat than about the surface of the moon. We urgently need to explore this part of our living world because life and entire habitats in our oceans are at risk. By developing underwater drones, I want to contribute to the exploration and protection of the oceans.

Let us be partners.
